Have you tried cleansing without detergents? It’s a no-brainer.

Have you tried cleansing without detergents? It’s a no-brainer.

One of the most common reasons people come to Mokosh is because they are experiencing dry, flakey, irritable skin. In most cases, they already have an extensive skin care routine using well known brands, yet their skin is still uncomfortable.

What’s going on?

Dry, flakey skin means the oily part of your skin's barrier is deficient. When the skin becomes prickly and itchy, it's a sign that irritants are getting through the skin’s barrier and setting off an immune response.

How do you restore the skin’s barrier?

The lipid, or oily, component of the skin’s barrier is what is lacking when the skin is dry. It can’t be restored with any old oil - it requires oils rich in a particular type of fatty acid, known as linoleic acid. When applied to the skin, linoleic acid can be incorporated into the skin’s ceramides, which are an essential component of the skin’s oily barrier.

What’s the problem with detergent cleansers?

Most people don’t realise that standard liquid face cleansers are made from detergents, sometimes called surfactants. As you can imagine, these detergent cleansers do a good job of getting rid of dirt, but they also deplete the oily part of your skin’s barrier. Your skin may feel 'squeaky clean' - but it's bad news for your skin. They can leave the skin’s barrier so depleted that it is susceptible to irritants, invasive bacteria and chronic skin problems.

What’s the solution?

It may come as a surprise, but we don’t need to use detergents on our face to keep it clean. The skin on our face is thin and delicate and constantly exposed to the environment, and therefore it needs to be treated gently to preserve its barrier function. Most importantly, cleansing should leave the skin’s lipid barrier intact.  We have created two detergent-free cleansers that work in different ways to keep your skin clean and healthy while protecting its barrier.

Oil Cleansing

Our Makeup Remover & Cleansing Oil works on the principle that oil binds oil. The oils we have selected for this product will penetrate the skin’s pores and pick up dirt, pollutants and excess sebum. It is also rich in linoleic acid, so it will replenish the skin’s lipid barrier at the same time. After massaging over the skin, oil is removed with a warm water-soaked flannel that is pressed onto the skin. The flannel is rinsed and the process repeated until excess oil is removed. The skin is left hydrated, smooth and plump. Note that many oil cleansers include a detergent to help remove the cleansing oil at the end of the process. However, this negates much of the benefit of an oil cleanser, since it will also deplete oils from the skin’s barrier.

Herbal Cleansing

Our Facial Cleanser, Exfoliator & Mask is a blend of 10 botanical powders, chosen for their ability to promote skin refinement and renewal. When mixed with water, the ingredients are activated so they are most potent when in contact with your skin. The paste is massaged over the skin in light circular motions, resulting in a gentle cleanse and micro-exfoliation. It leaves the skin smooth, soft and clarified, and also delivers humectants, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Which Cleanser is Best for Me?

Both our cleansers suit all skin types, and critically, both will protect the skin’s barrier function.

Makeup Remover & Cleansing Oil  can be used once or twice daily by all skin types. It’s particularly helpful for skin that is sensitive and dry - it leaves the skin replenished and restored. For oily skin it can help restore lost barrier function, normalise sebum, and is renowned for its ability to remove blackheads.

Facial Cleanser, Exfoliator & Mask is beneficial for all skin types because of its abundance of water-soluble nutrients combined with its gentle exfoliation. It is loved by those with young and acne-prone skin types because it removes cell debris that can easily clog the pores. Once daily use is ideal for oily, combination and normal skin types. Dry and mature skin types often prefer to use it only 2-3 times per week, while sensitive skin types should start slowly with this product and only use regularly if the skin does not react. Starting with a sample size is always recommended for sensitive skin.

Haven’t tried them yet?

Both our cleansers are available in sample and mini sizes, as well as in our Starter Packs. We think you’d be surprised at the difference it makes when you make the switch to our detergent-free cleansers - so why not give them a try?

I’ve used both products, the oil cleaners take a bit of mind adjustment. One you start using and seeing the benefits , it’s most likely that you won’t go back to the creamy ones again . ….. Exfoliating cleanser is brilliant. …. Both are definitely worth investigating. Enjoy 😊
