Many mainstream beauty brands feed into society’s pressure on women to achieve synthetically flawless skin. This comes at a price - both to our physical and mental health.
Mokosh was created to give women a better option. Our goal is to empower women by providing them with the tools to care for their skin in the healthiest way possible.
The physical toll of mainstream beauty products
We are bombarded, day and night, with advertisements promising miracle cures to our skin woes: "goodbye wrinkles!", "instantly flawless skin" - you've seen them.
What you won't often see mentioned though, are the downsides to these products.
While they may help alleviate one problem, they often contribute to the creation and exacerbation of others - this keeps us locked into a cycle of buying more and more skin care and often falling into the trap of skin care overload.
Synthetic ingredients, which are found in all conventional skin care, can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, leading to irritation, dryness, and sensitivity. Additionally, some synthetics, such as parabens and phthalates, have been linked to potential health concerns.
As researcher, Dr Chris Callewaert explained "We are doing a ‘mass murder’ on the skin on a daily basis, without even knowing or thinking about it.”
Simply put, it isn't in most brands' interest to tell you this. They can sell more skin care if your skin is unhealthy.
That doesn't sit right with us.
The mental load
The pressure on women to conform to unreasonable beauty standards disrupts all aspects of women’s lives. Beyond our wallet and our skin health, it also impacts self-esteem and life decision-making, often resulting in stress, anxiety, and emotional upheavals (1).
A research paper from 2016 found "Digital alteration means that increasingly the images with which we are bombarded are ever more idealised and unreal, and this exacerbates the problem by setting ever higher expectations of what it is to be normal, good enough, or perfect. Airbrushing to remove imperfections, whiten teeth, elongate and narrow limbs, slim waists, increase breasts, is not only accepted but expected"
Almost a decade on and technology and media are even more integrated into our lives and the ability to alter images is even easier, making navigating the beauty landscape more difficult than ever.
We wanted to opt out of this system, and it turns out, a lot of other women do too. So, we created Mokosh.
Skin care that loves your skin
At Mokosh, we respect you and your skin. We are always transparent about what is and isn't in our skin care, we don't airbrush our model's skin and we never hide harmful ingredients behind confusing numbers and names. We never overpromise and underdeliver.
We offer skin care that nourishes, balances and revitalises without compromise.
Every ingredient in our products is chosen for its ability to work in harmony with your skin, deliver nutrients that repair and restore your skin’s barrier, while promoting its health and vitality.
Mokosh skin care is completely free of synthetic ingredients
Mokosh is virtually unique amongst skin care brands in our policy of completely eliminating synthetics from our formulas.
Even certified organic brands that include water in their formulations must include synthetic ingredients like emulsifiers and preservatives, which can disrupt the skin’s barrier.
A disturbed skin barrier can lead to a range of skin problems (read more here).
Our 100% certified organic formulas are designed to work with your skin, not against it.
Fair trade and organic ingredients - better for women and the planet
From the beginning, we have been dedicated to sourcing our ingredients from suppliers implementing fair trade practices where possible.
Currently, our shea butter, cacao butter and coconut oil are sourced from fair trade suppliers. This means that the people involved in harvesting and processing these ingredients, in many cases women, receive a fair price for their work. Fair trade prohibits child labour while promoting gender equality and child education, as well as sustainable farming practices.
Organic certification also has a social justice component, requiring fair wages and non-discriminatory practices for workers.
Mokosh products contain 100% certified organic ingredients, which means they are completely free from pesticides and herbicides - so what touches your skin is as pure as it can be.
Mokosh celebrates true beauty
Every drop of Mokosh is infused with respect for the earth, its people, and the beings with whom we share this planet.
With each product, Mokosh invites women to invest in themselves - to choose health over synthesised perfection, and to embrace a lifestyle that includes a fairer, more sustainable future.
