Pure Body Balm - a skin healing hero based on an ancient recipe.

Pure Body Balm - a skin healing hero based on an ancient recipe.

Our Pure Body Balm is a ‘must have’ for many of our customers. Those who have discovered its healing and skin-protective benefits often report back to us with great excitement that they have at last found relief after a long hard search for a solution to an aggravating skin problem. Despite that, our  Pure Body Balm is one of our less well known products - possibly because as a balm, it lacks the ‘glamour’ of our more popular face products. We thought it was time to take a closer look at why our Pure Body Balm is so special, and incredibly useful to have on hand to prevent or heal a range of skin emergencies.

Beeswax - a precious ingredient used since ancient times

A key ingredient in our Pure Body Balm is beeswax. Beeswax was used in ancient Egypt and Rome, as well as in Ayurvedic medicine, to create ointments to treat burns, skin wounds and other skin conditions. These healing ointments were thought to be made from a blend of beeswax, honey, oils and plant extracts.

When we formulated our Pure Body Balm, although we knew about the healing benefits of beeswax, we wanted to try to create a balm of similar quality using only plant waxes. After a number of trials, it became evident that the plant waxes lacked the healing and nutritious properties of beeswax - the plant-based balms were clearly inferior in quality. Our concern about including beeswax, an animal-derived ingredient, in our products was countered by the fact that we use certified organic beeswax, which promotes sustainable agriculture while also protecting bee welfare (read more here).

What does the science say about beeswax?

Modern studies have found that the use of ointments containing beeswax on burns speed their healing and reduce both pain and secondary infections. Beeswax-containing ointments also reduce the intensity and frequency of itching during the healing of burns (1).

Other studies showed that when beeswax was included in a barrier cream, It was more effective at relieving inflammation, skin scaling, and skin cracks than commercial moisturisers containing urea and other traditional barrier ingredients. Overall, beeswax-containing ointments resulted in better skin condition and improved barrier integrity than other barrier-type ointments. In other studies, beeswax-containing ointments were found to be useful in atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, as well as nappy rash.

Beeswax has antimicrobial properties against known skin pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects - these, together with its ability to form a semi-occlusive barrier, are likely the reason for its potent healing benefits in a range of skin conditions (2).

A blend of 100% certified organic ingredients

We made our Pure Body Balm by blending some of our most precious, healing butters and oils with beeswax to augment and diversify the healing properties of this balm. We have included cacao butter, shea butter, macadamia oil and avocado oil, which add to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory profile, as well as coconut oil for its antimicrobial properties, and jojoba oil for its skin barrier improving benefits.

The result is a balm with a broad array of nutrients that promote healing while offering excellent barrier protection from irritants and the elements. All the ingredients are certified organic, which further enhances their nutritious profile.

What can it be used for?

This is one of our truly multi-purpose products and is suitable for all ages. It can be used to help soothe and speed healing of skin irritations, itches, minor scrapes and wounds. It can act as a barrier balm to prevent and help heal nappy rash, saddle sores, skin fold dermatitis and other potentially chronic skin conditions.

It can be used as a lip balm, as a hand balm for gardeners and outdoor workers, and as protection for those who have to repeatedly wash hands.  We also have customers who apply it to the face when surfing or swimming to protect and prevent excessive drying of the skin.

Customers report that it has helped prevent the return of eczema in babies, children and adults, and helped healing of cracked heels and poorly healing wounds.

What our customers say:

We felt that our customers should have the last say on how the Pure Body Balm has helped them and their loved ones. Here are some of their reviews.

'Miracle cream. My 92 year old mother had dry peeling almost ulcerated skin on her feet. Doctors gave her anti fungal and steroid cream. Nothing worked until we discovered this balm. One week later all healed up. This is now a staple in the cabinet. Love it!.' Vanda

'Hand Saver Balm. Very good barrier cream and hand balm for dry and eczematic skin like mine. Hands up for this balm. Would very highly recommend it.’ Anonymous

'Very nourishing and smells amazing. I bought a sample of this to try and am very impressed! I have very sensitive, eczema prone skin so I’ve always been very nervous to try new skincare. I used this on my dry hands and around my lips where I’ve been getting eczema and dryness and it is amazing - the skin is nice and smooth after just a couple of days. Love the smell of the product too - reminds me of being in a day spa! Will definitely purchase the full size.’ Natasha

'Great product. After the weather turns cold I find my skin dries out almost instantly and my moisturiser is no longer enough. I started using this balm over a serum on my face to protect it from the wind, cold temps and dry air instead of my moisturiser. It's worked absolute wonders! And my pores do not get blocked despite this being a thick balm. I really love it.Claire

I rarely finish a jar or tube of anything: I used up my first jar as my skin was crying out. In rural, dry, drought-stricken Australia this is the only balm that keeps my hands moisturised. I gave my dad a jar for his scalp and hair. I use it on my legs and feet and heels. Truly divine.’ Renee

This body balm is truly divine, it smells so good and is so hydrating. I use this as my body moisturiser when I feel like some extra pampering. I also use it on my baby if she is in need of some nappy balm. I love the multi purpose use of Mokosh products, and everything is so beautifully packaged and I love knowing it’s recyclable.Jessica
