Face Cream FAQS

Q: What is a face cream?

A face cream is a rich, emollient formulation designed to deeply nourish, hydrate, and protect the skin. Unlike serums, which provide lightweight hydration, face creams offer a more occlusive barrier that helps lock in moisture and shield the skin from environmental stressors.

Q: What are the main ingredients in Mokosh creams?

Our face creams are crafted from 100% certified organic, unrefined botanical oils and butters, chosen for their powerful skin-replenishing properties. These include:

  • Unrefined shea butter – Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, it deeply hydrates and strengthens the skin barrier.
  • Jojoba oil – A balancing oil that mimics the skin’s natural sebum, providing long-lasting hydration without clogging pores.
  • Baobab, macadamia, and sea buckthorn oils – These nutrient-dense oils help combat oxidative stress, improve skin elasticity, and support a radiant complexion.

Because our creams do not contain any water or filler, they don't require preservatives either. So they're purer, more concentrated, and longer-lasting than regular face creams.

Q: Why don't Mokosh face creams contain water?

Unlike conventional creams that are mostly water (often over 80%), our Face Creams are entirely water-free. This means they’re exceptionally concentrated — every ingredient is active and beneficial to the skin. It also allows us to create pure formulations without synthetic preservatives or emulsifiers, making them gentler, more nourishing, and better for your skin barrier.

Q: Will Mokosh face creams feel greasy on my skin?

Not at all. While our creams are rich in nourishing oils and butters, they’re designed to absorb beautifully into damp skin, leaving a soft, dewy finish — never greasy. The key is to use a very small amount (about the size of a pea or less) and apply to well-moistened skin. Spritz your face with water or toner to help spread the cream further.

Q: What makes the 3 face creams different from the face and body cream?

Our Rich Face Cream, Light Face Cream, and Skin Saviour Cream are dedicated facial moisturisers — each formulated with a precise blend of potent, skin-loving nutrients tailored for the delicate skin of the face. These creams are more concentrated in antioxidant-rich oils, botanical extracts, and essential fatty acids that target specific skin needs like barrier support, collagen-protection, repair, and elasticity.

Our Everybody Cream is a beautiful multi-purpose moisturiser designed for face and body. It delivers deep hydration and barrier protection wherever your skin needs support, and is especially loved for its simplicity and versatility. However, it’s not as densely packed with nutrients as our facial creams, making it ideal for those who prefer a minimalist routine or are seeking an all-over moisturiser for the whole family.

This difference also explains why the Everybody Cream comes in a larger jar, as standard. You're encouraged to slather it everywhere you need hydration!

Q: When should I apply a cream?

In general, you should first cleanse your skin, then apply toner, then serum, and finish by applying face cream.

For daytime, some prefer a lighter option, choosing one of our serums as their sole moisturiser. Others like to a light application of cream on top of their serum for a dewy, nourished finish. At night, apply a little more or a richer cream to support your skin’s natural overnight repair process

Q: I'm not sure what my skin type is, what face cream should I use?

If you'd like to discover your skin type, try our Skin Type Quiz.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the recommended skin type for each cream is only a suggestion, a guide.

Each of our face creams is formulated to support a range of skin needs.

Ultimately, your choice depends on how much moisture your skin craves. Some people prefer a richer cream at night and a lighter one during the day. During summer your skin will likely need a lighter option - perhaps a serum alone during the day in summer, and serum plus cream during winter. It's all about learning to tune into what your skin needs and what feels best for you.

Q: Can I use a cream as a standalone moisturiser?

Yes! Our face creams provide lasting hydration and nourishment.

Unlike conventional creams that contain up to 80% water, Mokosh face creams are 100% water-free and filler-free. This means that a little goes a long way. They deliver powerful hydration without the need for added fillers or synthetic stabilisers.

To increase the spreadability, you may like to spritz your face with toner or water before applying your cream.

Q: Can I use face creams around my eyes?

Yes and no.

Yes, you can use our our Skin Saviour Cream under the eye. But no, you can't use just any face cream around the eyes. Let us explain...

The skin under the eye is extremely thin and delicate. It has a thinner dermis and epidermis than elsewhere on our bodies, with a correspondingly thinner layer of collagen and elastin.

The Skin Saviour Cream is designed specifically to be light, nutrient-dense, and gentle enough for this region. It is a great option for those with dry, very dry, and mature skin who require a more hydrating option than a serum.

But beware - not all face creams should go under the eyes, especially if you are using a conventional cream with synthetics, preservatives and fragrances in it.

Q: Can I layer serums with creams?

Absolutely. Mokosh face creams work beautifully alongside our Beauty Serums.

  • Apply your serum first to deliver potent nutrition and lightweight hydration.
  • Follow with your face cream to seal in moisture and provide long-lasting nourishment.

This layering technique offers increased hydration while giving your skin the benefits of both oil-based serums and deeply protective creams.

Q: Can I use multiple Mokosh creams?

Yes, you can. Some people prefer a lighter cream in the morning and a richer one at night, depending on how their skin feels throughout the day. Your preference may also change with the seasons - your skin will be drier in cooler weather may need a heavier moisturiser than during summer.

You can also use different creams for different areas. For example, someone with mature, dry skin may use the Rich Face Cream for the face and the Skin Saviour Cream for the under eye and neck region.

Q: Are Mokosh face creams suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. Many of our customers with sensitive or reactive skin have found our creams to be soothing and restorative. Because we leave out synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and emulsifiers — and use only certified organic, unrefined ingredients — our products support rather than disrupt the skin barrier.

If you’re unsure, we recommend patch testing first. If you'd like to sample the different formulas, try our Face Cream Discovery Set.

Q: Do your face creams contain skin irritants?

Because our creams are free from preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and emulsifiers, they are less likely to cause irritation compared to conventional creams.

It is important to note that our Rich and Light Face Creams contain essential oils. If you are sensitive to essential oils, opt for our Everybody Cream or Skin Saviour Cream - both are completely fragrance free.

However, everyone's skin is different. We recommend starting with a sample size and conducting a patch test if you are prone to irritation. When in doubt, always consult your healthcare professional.

Hi Lenore, we recommend applying your sunscreen after your moisturiser has had a few minutes to sink into the skin, say around 5 minutes. For some, the lighter serums work better than the creams, however this will depend on your skin type!

What is the best way to combine a sunscreen for the face and a moisturiser?
