Module 4: Caring for Mature Skin

Text Version

Why Does Our Skin Age?

As we grow older, our genetic "clock" limits the number of divisions a cell can undergo. With reduced cell turnover, visible signs of ageing appear. This is a completely natural and unavoidable process.

External Factors

The speed of skin ageing can be increased by exposure to environmental factors that damage genes and the proteins they encode. The external agent that causes the most damage to skin is UV light. Other factors include:

  • Cigarette smoke
  • Car exhaust fumes
  • Air pollutants

Internal Factors

The science is less developed but available research indicates that the following are markers that slow signs of ageing:

  • A varied, plant-based diet
  • Regular exercise
  • A happy social life
  • A means of releasing stress

Skin Characteristics

The way ageing presents differs from person to person but common characteristics include...

  • Wrinkles
  • Loss of fat
  • Sagging
  • Thinning skin
  • Dryness
  • Loss of elasticity
  • Paleness
  • Patchy pigmentation

Needs

Focus on protecting the skin with antioxidant-rich products that minimise damage to collagen, elastin and matrix.

Deliver cell-supporting nutrients, and replenish the skin's barrier to build resilience and increase elasticity.

  • Detergent cleansers
  • Products containing emulsifiers, preservatives and other synthetic ingredients.

Embrace

  • Vitamins A, E, C

Morning Routine

We suggest the following:

1. Cleanse

Makeup Remover & Cleansing Oil: This will cleanse the skin of oil-soluble dirt and pollutants while delivering pro-vitamin A and E, both potent antioxidants. This is our gentlest cleanser and highly recommended for mature skin, especially if it tends to be dry.

2. Double cleanse/mask

Facial Cleanser, Exfoliator & Mask: Cleanses skin of cellular debris without detergents and gently exfoliates cell debris. Most people with mature skin require use only once or twice a week.

3. Tone

Pure Hydrosol Toner: With anti-inflammatory properties and a pH of around 5, our gentle toner helps restore the skin’s acid mantle. It also makes the ideal aqueous base on which to apply our water-free moisturisers.

4. Nourish

Raspberry & Pomegranate Beauty Serum: Light, highly bioactive concentrate designed for normal and dry skins.

Bakuchiol Revival Serum: Bakuchiol has anti-ageing benefits similar to retinol - without the dryness and irritation.

5. Protect

Light/Rich Face Cream: For dry skin, you may want to layer Rich or Light Face Cream over Serum.

Common Queries

Q: Why has my skin become drier with age?

This is very normal!

As we age our skin naturally becomes thinner and drier.

This is mostly because of a gradual loss of collagen, elastin and matrix from the dermis, as well as reduced production of sebum.

Q: How can I reverse signs of ageing like wrinkles?

We can't turn back the clock, however we can reduce visible signs of ageing by using protective, nutrient-rich skin care, embracing a healthy lifestyle and avoiding damaging factors like UV rays.

We recommend combining our basic skin care routine with our 2 Intensive products: Bakuchiol Revival Serum and Kakadu Plum Revival Mask, both of which are designed to target signs of ageing.

Q: At what age should I start using "anti-ageing" skin care?

"Anti-ageing" is a very loaded term.

At Mokosh, we recommend taking a holistic approach to ageing, by taking care of mind, body and spirit and nourishing the skin with pure, nutrient-rich skin care.

This approach will slow the signs of ageing more effectively than any invasive procedure.

This can start at any age.

Q: Are there natural skin care alternatives to surgery and pharmaceuticals?

There are many amazing, superfood ingredients that are natural and can have a profound impact on the skin.

Our Intensive Range harnesses ingredients like Kakadu Plum (nature's most potent source of vitamin C), and Bakuchiol (nature's alternative to Retinol) to enhance collagen, reduce collagen loss and brighten the skin.

Q: What's your ultimate "anti-ageing" skin advice?

In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, true health is achieved by bringing balance to all aspects of our lives.

Our skin care, like our food, should be pure, nutrient-rich and support our body's innate healing and regenerative processes.

Embracing balance in mind, body and spirit, and learning to nurture these aspects of ourselves allows us to age with health and vitality...beauty in its true form.
